Title: On the Wagon?
Post by: MovedGoalPosts on 01 January 2012, 11:40: PM
So it's time for our new year resolutions and for many that will probably be one of cutting down the booze (and I know there will be a few fingers pointing at me).

Now I was going to do a Ramrod and try and abstain for a month.  Then I saw this article:http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16354472 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16354472)
So maybe I can still have a bit of a drink at weekends, but keep things a bit more moderate than trying to do all the allowed units in one sitting, and abstain Monday through Thursday?
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: Ramrod on 02 January 2012, 06:23: AM
I saw the same article(s) but I still think it's worth stopping completely for a month......and then for a day or two a week the rest of the year.
I think the main thrust of their gripe is that people are more likely to overindulge the rest of the year if they abstain in January. The trouble is that the papers seem to be reporting this as a reason not to abstain in January.
Thats what I'm doing  :)

Right, I'm on holiday from Friday 3rd August so I've decided to not drink alcohol till then....... :D
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: MovedGoalPosts on 16 July 2012, 08:26: PM
Surely you have that wrong.  Drink normally before the holiday so you are "in practice", then abstain after the holiday whilst you recover?
Title: Re: On the Wagon?

You are quite correct but doing it this way gives me a point in time to aim for........ :D

And the inevitable boozing binge will be upon you, followed by a humdinger of a hangover  :o   :D

Going without alcohol for a few weeks - just to see if you can, is a sure sign of a potential alcoholic (apparently)  ???

I don't know why you and MGP continue on with this farce, just accept that you drink heavily and mitigate it by eating well and drinking plenty of teaa for the rest of the day.
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: MovedGoalPosts on 20 July 2012, 03:20: PM
Eating well.  Now you are complicating thing.  It's bad enough trying to moderate booze consumption.  Being on a diet as well would be purgatory :(
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: Stu038 on 20 July 2012, 03:41: PM
Well you see that's what I thought last year :( but the reality isn't as bad as you might think :tu: it only really takes a couple of weekly shops to get into the habit. The problem is when you think of it as a diet.
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: MovedGoalPosts on 20 July 2012, 03:47: PM
Ah but nature put a gun to your head and placed you in purgatory with Hobson's Choice.
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: Stu038 on 20 July 2012, 04:04: PM
True, but its about not over reacting, I could have stopped drinking but I made the choice to drink less beer and make up for it with wine instead. I don't pig out with a large packet of crisps every night while playing but most nights I'll have jelly teddies or grapes instead.

Don't go for sweeteners in your tea and coffee but use something like Canderell instead because you can fool yourself into thinking your still putting two spoons of sugar in there. We naturally resent change so why try to make huge changes just make small almost unnoticeable ones.
Title: Re: On the Wagon?
Post by: MovedGoalPosts on 20 July 2012, 04:12: PM
Ah, less beer making up for it with wine.  The theory is good, assuming you don't drink wine in beer like quantities :drunk:

As for food, I haven't taken sugar, or a substitute in tea, coffee, etc for years.  Soft drinks like Coke are always the thin, not full fat, versions.  I avoid buying nibbles like biscuits, crisps etc for home use and even the sausage rolls and stuff I might pick up for FNG have been reduced.  One day I might see a difference in waistline, but the waistline is still going in the more rotund direction :(

And has it resulted in a weight loss?

I haven't drank since new years eve.  I had the norovirus then a cough for which I am now on antibiotics and more recently a 'small surgical procedure' that means I'm on Ibuprofen too.

That could and I say could, be muscle growth, don't forget, muscle weighs more than fat so an increase isn't always bad news, what about inches, waistline etc

It is very nice. Very smooth but still has a harshness to be expected of a 43% whisky

Very true.   :tu:

I'm fairly sure that I'll resume drinking for FNG this week as it's only one day earlier and I'm not that much of a stickler for the rules  :)

Guys, you don't need to go dry - just cut down to a sensible level.
You'll only binge again after the dry spell, because you'll believe you've earned it. It's human nature. :)

And that is why going dry is a good idea.  It is all too easy to finish off that whole bottle of wine, after all what is moderation, one glass is just warming up.  And when that is being done 3-4 times a week, it's too much.  So for me at least deciding not to drink at all is my best way of moderating.

Having done a couple of dry January's now, I find the hardest part is usually week two.  Most of this is about habitual behaviour, not a need, and it's breaking that cycle of just slobbing out in front of the TV or computer glass in hand.  Get past that second / third week and the lifestyle is changing.

Only problem is I swap one vice for another.  I now need shares in the manufacturers of Coke Zero.

Whatever works for you MGP - it's all good, but I think the Coke Zero is probably much worse on your innards than wine.

It's easier for me because I only really drink beer, it's far simpler to control the volume imbibed, and I don't feel too bad about leaving 1/2 a can, as beer tends to be quite cheap compared to wine.

Based on the government's recommendations, I was drinking far too much.  Think 3 - 4 bottles wine a week, and then a other stuff as well.  Can't have been good for me.  Basically if I opened a bottle it would be consumed.  FNG especially I would then go back for another :(

Well, there's no harm in cutting down a bit. Just do what feels comfortable.

I used to drink about 15 - 20 pints of Stella every week (3 - 4 pints, 5 days a week). Ive cut down to 4 pints a week now - one evening out down the pub. Every now and again (about once every 2 months), I'll go out twice in one week.  :o.

Nope I'm weak.  I find that I can go "cold turkey" for a period, but what I cannot do is drink in moderation.  If I open a bottle of wine, it will all get drunk in one sitting then I wonder whether to open another, or simply move to the whisky.  It's all or nothing, and that isn't good.

Get smaller bottles, keep less in the house and only have spirits on special occasions - it takes a while to train the brain, but that is essentially what I do.

Luckily, I made a concious decision long ago to stay off spirits 99% of the time as I think that it's spirit consumption that buggered my dads health up to the point that he couldn't really drink anymore when he got past 65 yo. I probably have one bottle of (very good) brandy  a year. I want to be able to keep drinking for the rest of my life ('cos I really like it) and I won't be able to if I fuck myself up with it at a relatively young age.
I know what you mean about the bottle getting drunk & wanting more. That's something that I also need to watch!  :(

I've decided to only drink on Fri/Sat/Sun and abstain Mon/Tues/Wed/Thurs.

She's probably giving up as well. It's easy for her as she doesn't drink much anyway

Title: Re: On the Wagon?

LoL.

But in my case a major part of that is I have been slumbering in bed most of the last week so am not actually tired when I try and hit the sack.  I usually find it takes a couple of weeks for the body to really adjust to the idea it's not trying to decontaminate itself every minute of the day at which time I then actually need less sleep.

So, our older members will be familiar with the concept of time/life passing much more quickly as we get older. The weeks and months/years just start to accelerate by.
Fear not. I have the answer to that!
Abstinence from alcohol!
The passing of time slows to the speed of an arthritic snail!  :(

Ten more weeks to go........... :banghead:

Rammy is a masochist and thus doing 3 months (or perhaps he simply can't count a month?)  But without booze it'#s definitely the case that weekends are a lot longer (or perhaps it's just that I remember more of them).

Wrong again, assuming you are doing a proper 3 months, as opposed to some arbitrary number of days.

Rammy, after today, you have 62 dry days left, after completing 29 - so almost 1/3 of the way there.....

It would be 61 days, but it's a leap year :D

Almost forgot - you actually have 61 days and 23 hours - because we lose an hour on the last Sunday in March - that's a comforting thought? :D

Three months   On the other hand this thread suggests you haven't actually acheived that duration so far   so in Rammy's world is it actually 12 weeks?

Dry January is tough enough although once you've done a month you've "broken the habit" so keeping going longer probably isn't so diffilcult, providing "friends" don't put too much temptation in the way.

For me I'm going to get through the first month before going further .....

This month is going to be a big struggle judging by the way work is going to be mental.  Of an office that was supposed to be expanding staff numbers, we've in fact lost three in the last month and despite people accepting job offers they never turned up, plus one of the bosses has gone long term sick.  Leaves about 12 people trying do the job that ideally needs nearly 20 of us :(

Maybe I should adopt this idea.
