How long did it take you to find such a dodgy film title to start off this thread with?  Actually knowing your past posting preferences I suspect there was no effort involved at all :erm:

One really crap film.

Mixture of Independance day meet's War Of The World's.

Typical plot earth get's invaded America saves the day someone wake me up when something good comes out that isn't the typical usual crap.

Damien you can't really have expected anything else but a standard Hollywood Blockbuster "we've saved the world after a bit of jeapardy" plot.

Damien you can't really have expected anything else but a standard Hollywood Blockbuster "we've saved the world after a bit of jeapardy" plot.

I knew it was going to be that sort of story but I thought they might have atleast tried to make it entertaining instead of what it is which is crap.

To be honest Skyline which is a rip off of it is a better film and I may even watch the SyFy channel version of it at the weekend, and that will probably be better as well.

SyFy seem to rip off all the major releases and most of the times they are crap but the last few have been better than the Hollywood Blockbuster version's.

Sucker Punch, not to bad but abit of a mixture of other film's. It's a film I wouldn't watch again.

Red Riding Hood, Abit wierd and not really like the stories you tell a kid but a good one time watch.

Limitless, Very good film easily able to be watched more than once.

Cougars Inc, Not to bad but a watch once film.

Hall Pass, Very good and sometimes VERY FUNNY will watch that one again.

Getting board with film's now though as they all just seem to be remakes or just really crap film's but atleast I have some older film's to watch instead.

You do not need to watch this.  What you do need to know is what sort of sick and twisted messed up mind came up with the concept and why the hell they weren't handed a straight jacket alopng with anyone who agreed to provide finance so the thing could be made.

"Taken" is awesome. I love Neeson's OTT ass-kicking :D

I watched "Source Code" last night. It's the second film from Duncan "Zowie Bowie" Jones (he did "Moon"). I think that "Moon" is better, but I still very much enjoyed "Source Code". 8/10

Saw Thor the other day, and tend to agree with you Damien.

To be fair Thannis thoroughly enjoyed it, but I was too busy thinking of the opportunities that were missed on what could have been a pretty good twist on a classical story.

Schindlers List for the first time last night.

Awesome film about a harrowing subject.  Dealt with very well I thought and just staggering that the kind of persecution seen in that film actually happened.

True Grit - 9/10  Some great performances with a strong storyline that didn't pull any punches (and there were a couple of them).  Made a nice change to watch a film with action that wasn't reliant on CGI effects.

Skyline - 5/10  OK some nice special effects but that was about it.

Title: Re: Films we have watched lately
Post by: damien c on 06 June 2011, 04:51: PM
Second's Apart - Excellent Film well worth the watch, it's about twins with a power of telepathy or what ever it is but really good.

X-Men First Class - absolute garbage will not be watching that again found it really boaring, while there is action in it you can predict the whole story and plot within the 1st 20 minutes. It does clear up some question's from the older ones but not enough.

Hannah - Not to bad but again predictable might watch it again sometime but not in the near future.

Red Faction Origin's - Based on the games think it is the 2nd and 3rd really worked well, but being a Scy-Fy channel film it won't get the recognition it deserves considering it is based on a game, but again this is predictable aswell after about 45 minutes but still pretty good.

Might start to give film's a miss as they are just all the same crap at the moment, blow this up blow that up, catch this person kill that person, save the world from this and that. (always America saving the world)  All the same stuff just rehashed in to something new with a new name.

To be honest though most thing's even games are the same now, the only decent thing's coming out are some TV show's which are either new series of old programmes or whole new programmes where people actually use there imagination or take inspiration from book's and make it work.

I don't completely agree with you there mate, granted it wasn't as good as the first and there was a 10 mins period in the middle where it went flat and I thought it was going to bomb but it picked up again and finished pretty well I thought, definitely better than the second one and worth a 7

Ironclad - Plenty of blood and guts. and a couple of good bits of action, but when it boiled down to it, just another historical sword and armour vehicle.

Battle for Los Angeles.  Plenty of CGI effects, but otherwise a predictable big budget retiring army guy saves the world scenario.

I've not read the book although Thannis has, the next ones due out in a few weeks irrc.

We saw the film not long after Thor if memory serves which meant it could have scored a -10 and would still have been awesome :D

Saw Super 8 at the cinema yesterday afternoon, pretty impressed with it to be honest, easily an 8/10  :tu:

The plots a bit linear and probably the worst acting I've seen from Kyle Chandler who I normally quite like but overall its a really enjoyable film and well worth seeing.

Cowboys versus Aliens.

Considering the cast and the potential story line it should have been better :( The special effects were upto standard, acting was pretty good, script wasn't too bad but overall it was heavy going :(

It was more a "how much longer", rather than "finished already? " sort of film

5/10

harry brown - micheal caine is brilliant a must watch imho
the kid - About Kevin Lewis who grew up in poverty but survived to make a better life for himself and his family. really enjoyed it
the social network - not bad some really good one liners but after a while it gets a bit boring.

I have no idea how much it's been changed again.  I suspect it's quite minor since most of the copyright statements are based onthe 1990s DVD "special edition" which is when he did most of the "messing".  Since I'm not a total geek afficionado, I can't remember if there are differences.

Done the "proper" Star Wars trilogy first.  Next for the newer films, which aren;t in my view anywhere near as good.  And then there is a whole mass of extras to wade through.  I may be some time .....

Robotropolis - Think it's from Australia and a low budget as well but it wasn't to bad, look's like it would be on the Sy-Fy channel rather than anywhere else good for a laugh, but not to be taken seriously.

Weekender -  Excellent film set around the scene of illegal raves in Manchester in the 90's and how 2 people decide to try to do there own get in to trouble etc and take it from there. Very funny and a excellent film for what it is.

Insidious - Was recommended to watch this by my mate because of the fact I love these film's and think they are very funny when they are supposed to be scary. Not a bad film but I think Shrek would have made me jump more than this.

Valhalla Rising (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0862467/) (2009)
Atmospheric, moody, violent.
Beautifully shot. Minimal dialogue.
Best watched when slightly pissed.
Reminded me of Hero (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299977/) (9.5/10 imo) which is obviously a different genre and much grander but in the same style of cinematography.

An enjoyable romp which actually had a bit of a story rather than relying solely on outrageous stunts.

Went to see Dark Shadows yesterday evening before coming on the server.

It was OK, enjoyable enough, but not that great IMHO.
Johnny Depp was good (as usual).

Yes, more than likely, but it's always difficult to tell with teenagers - he'll either love it or hate it.

Iron Lady - Well acted and you can see why Streep won all those awards but to squeeze such a lifetime of events into a 2 hour film meant the film had no depth to it.

War Horse.  A must see.

Snow White and the Huntsman - last night before FNG.

Hmm, it was entertaining enough, a kind of mix of dark fantasy, chick-flick and action film.
Didn't like the sickly tearful bits too much - but there weren't too many of those.

Prometheus

Why it's good - It's Alien stuff innit  :tu:

Why it's not good - We all know the surprises of things growing in people so there is no surprise left.  :td:

It's certainly a good movie, not the best, but very watchable.  If you hadn't seen the original Alien movie, and subsequent analysis of it, you'd most likely not understand a lot of the references to stuff like the "Jockey" or even his spacecraft.  But it was interesting to see the evolution of what was effectively a black goo into the creature we know know as the Alien, and in a way it's good that it wasn't another film of everyone running around trying to not get in that creature's grasp.

But the 3D is a waste of time.

Went to see Dredd on Friday.

Can't make my mind up about it tbh :(

There's everything you would want in that sort of film, no pretence at a story line, fantastically graphic shots of death and destruction, several BFGs, mayhem, carnage on a grand scale with blood and body parts spraying in all directions and even a couple of jokes in poor taste.

The problem is you can't get away from thinking that it could be any action film with the likes of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis or Seagal :( the only thing that makes it Judge Dredd is the title and a uniform which pays lip service to a judges uniform, Mega City 1 isn't even a dome :(

Don't get me wrong Karl Urban does a great Dredd like chin and a huge plus is that he doesn't end up snogging Anderson who's hair is way too short, the actings pretty good too even by the bit part actors whose only role is to die horribly, hence the dilemma.

10 out 10 for a great action film, 0 out of 10 for sticking to the 2000AD world
Title: Re: Films we have watched lately
Post by: Ramrod on 16 September 2012, 08:04: PM

Title: Re: Films we have watched lately

Prometheus.

Utter garbage!!!

Apparently it started off being a prequel to the Alien films but that idea was scrapped.

I think they should have left it as a prequel because anyone watching it can see that it is a prequel and not something that can really be developed in to it's own story line for future films unless, they drastically start to change things if they do any sequels which I really think there will be another 2 films.

Not to spoil it for people who have not seen it yet, but I think most people will get bored and turn it off after 30 minutes.

Anyway I wouldn't recommend watching it, and will not be getting it on Blu-Ray or in Blu-Ray format, because I am really disappointed with it as it could and should have been so much better.
Title: Re: Films we have watched lately
Post by: Tezcatlipoca on 21 September 2012, 07:18: PM
DREDD had quite a low budget, hence the look of MC-1 and how almost the whole film is set inside one Block.

I loved it. I just hope that it does well enough in the US to justify a bigger-budget sequel.

Watched it yesterday and thought the same thing about the lay out etc of it being the same as The Raid.

I just didn't like it.

Let's hope though that the remakes of other films that are coming don't ruin the original films like these last couple have almost done.

Went to see Dredd on Friday.
<Snip>

10 out 10 for a great action film, 0 out of 10 for sticking to the 2000AD world

DREDD was written before The Raid, and filmed before The Raid, it just happened to be released afterwards. Any similarity is coincidence (and not in any way due to the script for DREDD leaking online before The Raid was made).

As for "not as good as the first"? Seriously?  ??? I thought it <urinated> all over the Stallone one, despite the lower budget.

I tend to agree Tez, The original Stallone one attempted to sort of stay true to the 2000AD world and while Stallone himself played Dredd as many assume he should be, the Hollywood of that time insisted on a romance between the lead characters where there wouldn't have been in the comic strip. That relegated the film to a Stallone cult film rather than a 2000AD cult film. This one made no pretence at sticking to the comics but over all created a more believable Dredd especially with regard to his respect for nothing but the Law. Add to that the shift to making darker and more gruesome films than when the original came out hence my original split score of 10/10 and 0/10

Seen it and didn't like it but I watched it all to see if it actually got any better and it didn't.

I think it's shocking that a film can be released with words used in it, that would normally get people arrested for saying to anyone.

I know it's set in the 1800's but still, I bet this film receives allot of complaints about it because of the use of those words.

The Purge, much better than I expected it to be. A couple of twists that were obvious but not so poorly done as to spoil the story line.

watched the latest fast and furious recently. not a bad film, some good funny parts, over the top driving scenes as to be expected and a runway that doesn't seem to end. a generous 7/10 but well laid up for another sequel

Very few sequels match up to the original.  After all the novelty of the original disappears and then they have to still find a good plot line.

How about Gremlins, toy story, evil dead and desperado (which was the sequel for El Mariachi)?-

Dredd - 7/10 - faithful to the comic book portrayal of the character - story a bit limited - but then it's a comic book film

Total Recall - 6/10 - Kate Beckinsale is far too thin, the chase sequence through all those willy-wonka style lifts was well overplayed, otherwise OK

Oblivion - 6/10 - good idea, did not get on and tell the story though, too much poncing about with being an 'effective team'

Clash of the Titans - 8/10 - good, really enjoyed

Wrath of the Titans - 7/10 - good, but not quite as good as the first one

The Dark Knight Rises - 5/10 - not very impressed, all a bit pedestrian

Star Trek Into Darkness.  It's OK.  Well made effects, as you might expect.  For me the plot didn't seem as strong or gripping as the earlier film.  This film relied heavily that you knew the characters and particularly knew how the relationship between Kirk and Spock had developed.  Any other characters were rather superfluous to anything other than Kirk,  Spock and Cumerbatch's villain.

Correct - it is a terrible film.
Wrath of Khan is generally accepted as the best one (and I agree) - it's a coin flip between the first one and Star Trek V for the worst one made.

There is about 30mins of them going into the energy field where it flips between the field and their faces with no talking.  Massive use of make-up, dodgy effects (I know it was 1980 I think) and ropey acting.

300 Rise of an Empire

As one might expect it's a little bit bloodthirsty.  It was OK, but I think the Spartacus TV series, which had a very similar style of camera work and animation was better.  You needed to have seen the first 300 movie for some of the references to make sense.  Overall very watchable with the added bonus of Eva Green topless waving a sword about

Fury:  Muddy, dirty, bloody.  Very much filmed in the modern up close and personal style of camera work that developed out of Band of Brothers.  There is nothing pleasant about it, fundamentally people die horribly.  But it is well made and the shermans vs tiger scene is a highlight.  But the final piece stretches credibility.

Spectre

What's Good? It's James Bond :D

What's Not so Good?  The Villain wasn't, in my view, that memorable and didn't really create the sense of jeapardy.  True he had a couple of henchmen who created a couple of good punchups but the action just seemed a bit remote from the head honcho.  A few interesting set piece stunts, but it was almost a sense of deja-vu.  I just didn't really get the sense of jeopardy and the main villain's lair just sort of blew up far too easily without explaining how the main man actually got out, other than seeing a couple of cars drive away.

If the book is the "book of the film", then the film is likely to be better.
Other way around (which it isn't in this case), then results are highly variable.

On that kind of subject, have you watched Moon? I saw it last week.  Very, very good.

I enjoyed moon! But then I enjoyed 2001.....and  as usual though I found the book(s) much better than the film.

It's on broadcast TV this month (one of the film channels, can't remember which, maybe Film 4 or MovieMix)
I found Moon quite disturbing, as it reminded me of elements of one of my bad paranoid episodes years ago - very good film though, but I don't think I'll be watching it again for a long time.

Tokyo Story (1953)

Meant to be the best film ever made (or at least in the top 3 or 4)
........I'll let you make up your own minds  ;D

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Very good, easily better than Ep1, 2, & 3, better than Ep VII, possibly the best one since Empire Strikes Back.

i loved 1 2 and 3 as they made me appreciate how good the originals are lol, but this one does prove they can make a good prequel, the only issue i had was with the very badly fitted darth vader suit.

Rating 9 out of 10

T2 Trainspotting.

'Twas OK, but not the sort of film I'd usually go to the cinema to see - wait for Blu-Ray/DVD/Illegal Download :D

Very, very good.  Loved it.  Nothing like the other Marvel movies.  Not for kids!

Seen a few this year. In no particular order....

My fave of 2017 was Blade Runner 2049.

Worst was Mother with Jennifer Lawrence, you need to have a working knowqledge of the Bible I think to make head and tails of the thing.

Get Out was different, not an oscar nominee that it seems to have been though.

Passengers was good.

Life was better than I thought.

Thor Ragnorak was hilarious.

The Lobster was just plain wierd as was Swiss Army Man!

Most dissappointing was Alien Covenant, being the MASSIVE Alien fan/nerd/geek I am this was such a let down. Fucking flute lessons and dancing aliens?!

Spiderman-Homecoming was meh, too childish.

Dunkirk was great to watch in the cinema, not sure how it will translate onto a TV screen.

It was brilliant, watched that twice and bought the Blu Ray!

Ghost in the Shell wasn't bad, not up to the original Manga/Anime though.

Trainspotting 2 was a good sentimental reminicsent romp!

John Wick 2 was a good laugh, disengage brain and watch Keanu do what he does best!

Annabelle Creation was crap

Wonder Woman was fantastic, think I have found a future wife should the current one become U/S!

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was great, not quite as good as the first maybe, but a typical Marvel film.

Logan was good if a little dreary, not what i expected

That's all I can think of right now!

I've seen A Quiet Place the other day. It's pretty good! Not too scary either, which is great for me. I don't like my horror films too scary. lol
