Alot of the more rural areas stayed pretty much the same up unitl the 1960s - that's when motor cars became more accesible to more people and then the tourists started arriving in larger numbers - and farming became more mechanised with the take up of the tractor - the old way of life then gradually diminished until it more or less completely dissapeared in the late 1970s early 1980s.

That can be said for most rural areas in the UK, not just where I live.

My grandmother used to drive a donkey and cart up until the late 1970s, delivering freshly picked cockles to Swansea market.
